What Makes a Powerful Professional TikTok?

From my point of view, a powerful professional TikTok…

  1. Is able to capture and keep a user’s attention. Many professional accounts I follow use a consistent hook, a phrase or a question, to grab viewers attention. They also use concise language, an upbeat tone, and a quick and steady pace to keep viewers interested.
  2. Is entertaining. Many users will use a current trend, a skit, music or a relatable story to make their content interesting for viewers.
  3. has a focus. Many professional TikTok videos aim to share a series of resources or tips and tricks surrounding a specific topic or story. This helps make the video clean and easy to follow.

TikTok is a wonderful tool for discovering new resources and finding people within your areas of interest that you connect with. Here are some excellent education accounts that I follow! I HIGHLY recommend!

Cyberbullying Lesson Plan

Why and How Did I Adapt?

For my adapted cyberbullying lesson plan I chose a lesson plan provided by Common Sense Media called Be a Super Digital Citizen. This lesson aimed to teach students how they might be able to act as a powerful bystander when cyberbullying is witnessed while online. This lesson appealed to me because it a versatile lesson that can easily be adapted for younger or older grade levels. This particular lesson was originally geared toward Grade 4 students but I adapted to follow B.C.’s Grade 3 curriculum. Also, the idea of including superheroes! Originally this lesson opted to include a couple more written activities and to make it more accessible to younger students I opted to make some of the original activities into opportunities for think, pair, share, or class discussion. I think that having the opportunity for discussion gives younger students the opportunity to properly voice their thoughts, idea, and opinions as some may still struggle to translate their thoughts onto paper. There is also the opportunity to gain more insight into their complex thinking that we most likely wouldn’t get on paper. I also wanted to put my own spin on the activities and materials so I created my own using Canva. I used some of my own language while including some of the original language from the activities. If I were to adapt this lesson plan to have it gear towards older students, I would like to find a platform or application in which t hey can create an animation of a cyberbullying scenario or create an avatar digitally.

What is TikTok?

TikTok is a social media platform in which users can create, post, and share videos with others. Videos often include dancing, singing, stories, or simply users just talking. While using TikTok, users can search for content that aligns with their interests. There are a wide range of topics, resources, and artistic creations that can be found via keywords or hashtags, much like Twitter!

How could I use it as a professional?

I often use TikTok as a way to gather fun and clever new resources for future teaching experiences. There are many educators that share ideas for classroom management, organization, teaching hacks, and various new ways to introduce content to students. TikTok can be a great professional tool as it allows professionals to share and exchange experience, ideas, and resources. As an educator, it is also a great tool to use with students as it can give them a new way to demonstrate understanding and share creativity.

How can I find people on Tiktok to become part of my PLN?

To find specific topics of interest on TikTok users can search hashtags and keywords. Within these searches, you can find the creators of your favorite videos and follow them in order to see more content in the future. For professionals, you can follow specific users, that share your passion and interests, much like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Users and creators can chat to each other in the comments or through direct messaging. Further, Users can participate in live video chats in which questions can be answered in real time.
